*UPDATE* – Another company is also recalling cucumbers, info added below.

RIO RICO, AZ – (Civic Media) – At least 68 people nationwide, including some in Wisconsin, have reported being sick in a salmonella outbreak connected to cucumbers, that’s according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).The cucumbers were sold at major retailers such as Costco and Walmart, with two distributors shipping affected products to Wisconsin.

SunFed Produce, LLC, based in Rio Rico, Arizona, announced a recall of all sizes of whole fresh American cucumbers packaged in bulk. The recalled cucumbers were sold from October 12 to November 26, 2024, and may be contaminated with salmonella.

The cucumbers are identifiable by the “SunFed” label or generic packaging that includes a sticker identifying the grower as “Agrotato, S.A. de C.V.”

Salmonella can cause serious infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms typically include fever, diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain, appearing six hours to six days after exposure.

People are advised not to eat any recalled cucumbers and to check their refrigerators for affected products. Those who think they may have consumed contaminated cucumbers should contact their healthcare provider.

SunFed says they’re working closely with health authorities to determine the source of the contamination and has set up a recall hotline for further inquiries.
